After school jobs for SUA students

TOLEDO OH – Many SUA students work at after-school jobs to earn money for fun activities save money for college, future cars, and other expenses.
Saint Ursula Academy students seek out jobs in many places. Most commonly, SUA Students turn to babysitting as their main source of income. Babysitting gives students the ability to have a flexible schedule while still gaining work experience.
Cecilia Chowdhary, a senior at Saint Ursula, has been babysitting since the seventh grade.
“I enjoy spending time practicing social skills and effective communication,” Chowdery said about why she started babysitting.
Chowdery went on to say that most of the money that she makes goes to gas bills and saving for college.
Some other students have turned to other entry-level jobs, such as food service. SUA sophomore Addy Arner is a barista in training at Sip, a coffee shop located in Westgate.
“It gives me something to do,” Arner said when asked about why she works as a barista. “It’s a good way to meet people.”
Arner also said that she recommends after-school jobs for others. “It’s a good thing to have and experience when you’re younger.”
For students, there are many rules that must be followed when they are employed. These rules are in place to make sure that students can focus on their academic studies and to make sure that teenagers are not being overworked.
Ohio Revised Code Chapter 4109 states that all students must have a workers' permit signed by their employer and the school to ensure a safe and beneficial working environment.
Code 4109 ensures that students under the age of 16 cannot work for more than three hours on a school day or for more than 18 hours a week. It also prohibits working before 7 a.m. or after 11 p.m. on a school day for minors.
These rules ensure that students can maintain a healthy work-school balance and keep jobs from overworking student workers.
After school jobs are a great way to learn more about how to manage money at a young age, and how to build good time management skills before college.
