One of SUA’s staple fundraising events every year is the highly anticipated Volley for Vets game. A Toledo-wide affair, bringing four of the local Catholic high schools together in a fun competition for a good cause. The three other high schools participating are Saint John's Jesuit, Saint Francis de Sales and Notre Dame.
Veterans Matter, is a national non-profit organization dedicated to the housing of displaced Toledo veterans currently housed more than 13,800 veterans and their families through the charitable works they have done.
The game is on Sunday March 24, starting at 6:00 p.m. with tickets on sale now, being $10 each. The SUA student section will be decked out in all camo cheering on the Saint John Jesuit High School team being coached by current SUA senior volleyball players. The opposing team will be made up of Saint Francis de Sales School seniors and coached by Notre Dame Academy students.
“I’m excited to be involved this year, I have gone to past Volley for Vets games and know how fun it's going to be,” said Erynn Moloney, one of the SUA seniors coaching at the event.
Moloney, when asked, also talked about the differences between being an athlete and a coach saying, “(o)n one hand, I really enjoy coaching and showing off the sport I love, but on the other hand, I’m pretty competitive and want to jump into the game and help out my players.”
Another active member of the SUA community helping plan the Volley for Vets game is executive student council member Mary Carol Kraus. Kraus and her fellow student council members have been planning this event further in advance this year striving to raise even more money for Veterans Matter. This includes additional concessions and raffle baskets that will be sold at the game, in addition to ticket and t-shirt sales with all proceeds going to Veterans Matter.
Kraus said her favorite part about planning Volley For Vets this year has been the connections she has made with students from other schools.
“I get the opportunity to meet kids in my grade that I might not have gotten to meet otherwise,” said Kraus.
Kraus also reflected on the community she has seen come together in support of this good cause and how gratifying it has been to work on a project like this.
Members of the SUA community are more than welcome to donate to Veterans Matter directly.
