By Samantha Dreier ‘24 and Grace Rawlins ‘26
In recent years, St. Ursula Academy has begun to highlight the extracurriculars that are offered. Mrs. Rachael Decker shared that “Extracurriculars increase a sense of belonging in schools which is tied to better academics.”
Here are some extracurricular events happening in February.
AFRO Club: Black History Month
On Feb. 23, the SUA AFRO Club will host a presentation celebrating Black History Month. A main focus of the presentation is to highlight the notable achievements of black women globally and within the SUA community. The AFRO Club will also be hosting a Kahoot on Feb. 22 during Sorelle. Mr. Hicks, the AFRO club moderator, commented on the “Sometimes stressful but exciting process of planning this year's presentation, especially seeing the students really step up.”
Spring Play
The curtain has closed on the musical, so here comes the spring play. This year's show is “The Revlon Girl” by Neil Anthony Docking. It is a story about mothers supporting mothers after a tragedy that claimed the lives of 116 children in 1960s Aberfan, Wales.
Auditions are on Feb. 26 and Feb. 27 in the Black Box Theatre after school for high school students.
Dance Team Placed in Top 10 at Nationals
After an eventful trip to Orlando, Florida, the SUA Dance Team placed third in Pom and sixth in Jazz at the UDA High School Nationals. Sophomore Lia Pappas said “You can’t explain the feeling of being on the National stage.”
Gymnastics Advancing to Districts
The girls on the Gymnastics Team are heading for Districts! The team is practicing daily and prepping for their showdown. Senior and four year team member Olivia Erwin said “I aim to finish out this gymnastics season big at districts.” The Gymnastic Arrows will be competing 30 minutes away at BGSU on Feb. 23.
Aqua Arrows
The SUA swim team has gained the title of Sectional Champions, which will advance the team to districts. Senior Delaney Heinze expressed that “Heading into championship season is so exciting this year! We have a strong team.” Heinze is ready to compete, yet sad to finish swimming at SUA.
Spring Sports
Winter sports are wrapping up, so spring sports are quickly approaching. Tryouts for lacrosse and softball are coming up in late Feb. and early March. Track and field and crew are also offered. Assistant Athletic Director, Mr. Hicks explained that “Sports give you an opportunity to have an additional experience outside of academics and more opportunities to meet new friends and try new things.”
