TOLEDO, OH - Saint Ursula Academy’s Diversity Advisory Committee hosted a multi-cultural fair entitled: A Trip Around the World: A Celebration of Cultures. The event took place on Tuesday, March 25 at Saint Ursula Academy in the upstairs gym.

The event gave students and parents in the SUA community a chance to display their native culture or ancestry, including their cuisine, traditions and customs.

“It was an opportunity to dive deeper into who we are as individuals and showcase what makes us unique,” said Mrs. Yolanda Durden, the Chairperson of the DAC.

The participants were given a table to set up their displays for the guests to view.

Mrs. Durden wished for the event to have a positive impact on the community surrounding SUA.

“I hope it gives us a sense of pride of what our school represents, and it just should represent a welcoming environment where you feel like you belong and you see other people that are like you,” Mrs. Durden said.

It is important for everyone at the school to feel included and seen, regardless of their culture. The Multi-Cultural Fair was a great way for students to be involved and help their culture be seen and recognized.

Mikel Byrd, a senior at SUA, was one of the students involved in hosting the event. She had a table that displayed Jamaican cuisine.

“I was inspired to participate in the Multi-Cultural Fair because I wanted to share a part of my culture with my SUA sisters and experience new cultures myself,” Byrd said.

She expressed how her favorite part of participating in the event was the fact that you not only got to share your own culture, but you also got to learn about other cultures.

“It gives you a glimpse into the multiple cultures that reside in SUA and provides new perspectives,” said Byrd.

This year was the first time SUA hosted the fair and DAC hopes to have this become their signature event each year in the spring. That means every year students will have the opportunity to spread their culture.
