SUA Golf Competes at State
In the last weeks of October, the SUA Varsity Golf team competed in the Ohio High School Athletic Association state golf tournament at The Ohio State University Greens. The team finished ninth out of 12 teams in the Division I female golf bracket, with a total score of 666. The highest individual scorer was Payton Donnelly, who finished the tournament with a 165, tied for the 41st position.
Overall the team finished out a great season, with a Three Rivers Athletic Conference (TRAC) title, a District Title, and a top ten finish at states. “They did great,” Head Golf Coach Jim McGowan said. “All of them worked hard... They have prepared and there was nothing to be scared of, just go play another tournament.”
Most on the team members are not strangers to the high level and high pressure situations that being at a state tournament brings. Four out of the five varsity players this year played at the state tournament last season, where the team finished ninth overall as well.
The varsity team consisted of Sophia Antypas, Hannah Chung, Kennedy Donnelly, Payton Donnelly, and Emma Myers. Every player competed during the State Tournament, all trying to help boost their team’s overall score.
“I will always be grateful for the experience,” freshman Kennedy Donnelly said. She was the only player on the team this year to not have competed at a previous State Tournament.
Antypas shot 175 on the state weekend, Chung shot 172, Kennedy Donnelly shot 166, and Myers also shot 166.
Looking back at the entire season as a whole, the team accomplished their goal, which was to compete at a state tournament and be competitive all season.
“I showed up when I had to and put down some pretty good numbers,” senior Hannah Chung stated.
This message was about the same from all of the players on the team, they showed up when they had too. The team dominated the TRAC all season, even having Payton Donnelly win player of the year for the third year in a row.
“The third time, it was like wow,” senior Payton Donnelly said. “I am really proud to be able to say that happened three times.”
The golf season was an exciting one, with many accomplishments that proved once again, that the Saint Ursula Golf program is one of the most successful in the area.
