Arrows Take Down Irish in 7th Annual Breast Cancer Bowl

Senior Arrows celebrate their victory over the Irish

Ready, set, hike! On Sunday October 16th, Saint Ursula Academy faced Central Catholic High School at St. John’s Jesuit’s Lyden Field in a long standing tradition of flag football to raise awareness for breast cancer and raise funds for The Victory Center.

The Victory Center is a nonprofit organization that is set out to provide support and care for cancer patients and their families through different therapies, support groups, and counseling. This year an outstanding amount of money was raised for The Victory Center through raffle baskets, 50/50, t-shirts printed by Jupmode, breast cancer awareness Pura Vida bracelets, and admission tickets to the big game.

Executive Student Council member Mary Carol Kraus states that, “The Victory Center provides support for cancer patients and their families right here in Toledo, and so it is very special that we have the opportunity to help out a local organization that is caring for people who live right around us.”

SUA seniors were coached by senior football players from both SJJ and SFS while CCHS girls were coached by their senior football team. Both teams trained extensively and fought hard for the coveted title of Breast Cancer Bowl champion on Sunday night, but ultimately SUA came out victorious in a 30-26 game.

Arrows huddle-up and pray as a team before starting the second half.

Emma Pfeiffer, an SUA senior and BCB player, said that practices were fun because of scrimmaging and having coaches and players of the week. “It was a fun yet competitive atmosphere to be in. You could tell that everyone wanted to do it for the same cause!”

Thanks to the generous support of all four school’s community, Breast Cancer Bowl has been a successful, and fun, way to raise money for The Victory Center and bring awareness to breast cancer patients and survivors.
