SUA installing its first turf field

Soon, people will begin to notice a significant change at Saint Ursula Academy, one that is hoping to bring the school to the next level.

Recently announced during Visitation week, the back field will be transformed and a brand new turf field will take its place. Thanks to donations made by Athletic Boosters and the very generous Strasser family, whom the field will be named after, the back field, once home to hilly terrain and mud, will now be renovated into pristine turf.

“I think the turf field will give our lacrosse and soccer programs an elite playing field that matches the elite level of those programs,” Athletic Director Mike Donnelly said. “It will enable the school to have functions such as outdoor mass, intramurals, and other activities.”

THe person who spearheaded this idea was Saint Ursula President Mary Werner, and has assisted with the planning and finding funding for the project.
Work is said to begin on the field starting late May, ater school has been let out for the summer. e field is estimated to be finished around August, taking a few months to complete. This way, soccer can begin the 2023 season on the new field.

The administration is still asking for support from the SUA community in hopes of raising the final amount needed to complete the entire field’s renovation. However, excitement has already begun surrounding this new addition. The lacrosse and soccer teams were the first to hear about this new announcement, but then it was made public to the entire school when senior student council leaders included it during the Visitation week pep rally.

“I feel really grateful that we are going to get one and excited that I am going to get to enjoy playing on it for my senior season,” junior lacrosse player Mary Carol Kraus said.

e new addition of the turf field mostly impacts those who will spend the majority of their time playing on it; the soccer and lacrosse teams. However, administrators believe that not only will it impact these specific athletes, but that it will have a greater impact on the school as a whole.

“With the improved facility, which involves the inclusion of the turf field, soccer and lacrosse will be able to practice in all weather conditions and have a very nice, respected facility,” junior soccer player Kate Williams said.

There is said to be a groundbreaking ceremony held publicly in May, where all of those generous donors who supported the endeavor will be recognized
