This week is the week most students have been waiting for all year. It is finally Intramural week at SUA and the final day of competitions is on Friday, April 26. Students are ecstatic to not only compete against each other but to come together as a school. The spirit-filled week is produced by the hard work and dedication of the students and staff.
“There’s a lot of things that go on behind the scenes that I think people don't really realize,” said Anna Harms, Senior Student Council Vice President.
This Friday the fieldhouse will be full of spirited students excited to take on the day of intramurals. The day will be filled with class dances, volleyball games and numerous other activities. Many of the competitions have already taken place throughout the week. Things such as hallway decorating, cake decorating and pickleball prelims are some of the events that take place prior to the final competition day.
While the students have fun competing with each other, faculty and staff members also like to partake in numerous activities. You can often find faculty and staff members competing in basketball, dancing and banner designing.
Mr. Mass is a notable member of SUA’s staff who has participated in the most Intramural Days throughout his time at SUA.
“The faculty dances started as part of visitation in order to recruit students to come to SUA and ever since then, it has become a tradition every year,” said Mr. Mass.
While students take these competitions seriously, they look at it as more than just competing against other classes. Many see this day as a time to celebrate the sisterhood at SUA and grow closer with their classmates. Intramural day is seen as a time to look back on all the hard work done during the school year and celebrate with their class.
Sara Olson is a junior at SUA who takes part in numerous activities throughout the week of intramurals. Olson states that being a part of things like the class video, class dance and hallway decorating are some of the things that bring her the closest to her class.
“It's truly a time to not only compete with other classes, but to have fun and bond with my friends, and create memories with my class,” said Olson.
Intramurals has been an ongoing tradition at SUA for decades. Throughout the years, competitions have gotten more competitive and with each year comes a new class that is hungry to win. While winning may be fun, the most important thing to these students is coming together and bonding with one another, creating friendships to last a lifetime.
